چکیده

For people living with type 1 diabetes, the Holy Grail of a closed-loop artificial system, combining glucose measurement and insulin delivery without requiring input from the individual with the condition, remains elusive.1 At present, the optimum approach appears to be a combination of insulin pump therapy and real-time continuous glucose monitoring.2 However, despite patient acceptance of this technological approach to glucose control,3 the majority of people still continue to use multiple daily injections (MDIs) of insulin. Whatever the method of insulin delivery, a fundamental component of training in intensive insulin therapy requires participants to be adept at handling numbers in order for them to understand the nuances of glucose monitoring and to calculate appropriate and safe insulin doses (Table 1).

Diabetes Numeracy

OBJECTIVE Understanding the reasons and eliminating the pervasive health disparities in diabetes is a major research, clinical, and health policy goal. We examined whether health literacy, general numeracy, and diabetes-related numeracy explain the association between African American race and poor glycemic control (A1C) in patients with diabetes. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS Adults with type ...

Validation of a diabetes numeracy test in Arabic

BACKGROUND The prevalence of diabetes Mellitus in Saudi Arabia is 24%, ranking it among the top ten Worldwide. Diabetes education focuses on self-management and relies on numeracy skills. Poor numeracy may go unrecognized and it is important to have an assessment tool in Arabic to measure such a skill in diabetes care. OBJECTIVES To validate a 15-item Diabetes Numeracy Test (DNT-15) in the Ar...

Poor numeracy skills are associated with glycaemic control in Type 1 diabetes.

AIMS To assess the numeracy and literacy skills of individuals with Type 1 diabetes and determine if there is a relationship with achieved glycaemic control independent of their duration of diabetes, diabetes education, demographic and socio-economic factors. METHODS One hundred and twelve patients completed the study (mean current age 43.8 ± 12.5 years, 47% male, mean duration of diabetes 22...

An Optimization K-Modes Clustering Algorithm with Elephant Herding Optimization Algorithm for Crime Clustering

The detection and prevention of crime, in the past few decades, required several years of research and analysis. However, today, thanks to smart systems based on data mining techniques, it is possible to detect and prevent crime in a considerably less time. Classification and clustering-based smart techniques can classify and cluster the crime-related samples. The most important factor in the c...

Addressing Literacy and Numeracy to Improve Diabetes Care

OBJECTIVE Diabetic patients with lower literacy or numeracy skills are at greater risk for poor diabetes outcomes. This study evaluated the impact of providing literacy- and numeracy-sensitive diabetes care within an enhanced diabetes care program on A1C and other diabetes outcomes. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS In two randomized controlled trials, we enrolled 198 adult diabetic patients with m...
